The Alchemist- Paulo Coelho

This book spoke to me and it’s always been one of the three books I’d recommend to someone.

I’ve read this several times and i always seem to key in on something different. I guess I get what I need most in each read.

Some people say that it’s about hope. I lean more to it being about listening to that voice inside you that speaks to you, about trusting your gut. To me, this is about finding out what your true desires are and going about getting them. Remembering that when a person truly desires something- the universe conspires to assist you in getting it! That’s powerful.

So as you as your tingling urges turn into strong desires, be careful. Be specific. Be deliberate. Those are the things I encourage you to do.

  1. dope. how about a mix of the two – hope is that little voice inside of you – YOUR inner voice – whispering “maybe” and “hell yes” when everything and everyone else around you is shouting “no”.

  2. Heard they were making this into a movie. Truly looking forward to the hero’s journey being displayed in its full glory. I remember clearly the moment I knew this was a special book. It quite literally infused me with energy and I couldn’t stop it. When it was revealed to Santiago who Melchizedek REALLY was and how he metaphorically gave him the choice of free will by handing him the stones off his breastplate…..It felt as he was talking to the reader.

We all have that power. The power to transmute something from nothing. The ability and authority to say YES or say No. the calling in the hero’s journey is also representative of what is to be discovered. We can answer the call and go down the rabbit hole. Or we can say no and continue to live in the same drawn out monotony and receive the same thing we have always gotten.

The dreamer and creator in all of us is urged to confidently, boldly, step out into the platform (your medium) and do something. Anything!! To discover the treasure he had to want something more. We see this awakening motif in every great story. The Choice is ours to embrace. Take the blue or red pill. Wake up to the Truth and do something about it. Or stay in Andalusia and keep doing the same thing you do everyday. Stay comfortable, or get uncomfortable and DISCOVER what’s lies beneath the surface. It’s always a choice.

Something to ponder… if our heroes were not challenged with change and discomfort, would there even be a story? Would we want to keep watching, reading or listening? SIDENOTE :(I love audio books and Jeremy Irons narrates an exquisite version of Coelho’s beloved story.)

I think it’s most certainly a story about discovery and realizing the God given powers we all have. Our weapons are our faith, our spoken word and our minds. Three intangibles that must be acknowledged in order to slay the dragon of fear, doubt and guilt. One of the reason this book is so wildly celebrated is simply because it awakens in any reader that spark of life that if nurtured and fanned will ignite a fire inside to pursue your passion and not give up on the hope of the past or the small whisper that guided you to the place you’re in, wherever it is you find your self. It’s everything you think it is and more.
